Skills You Develop While Working For An NGO

I have been volunteering in an NGOfor the last 10 years and it was a good learning curve so far. You acquire different skills and knowledge that could bring significant changes in your life as well as your career. Volunteering in an NGO team is not justabout social service, but it is also a way to enhance your capabilities. Every week I spend at least a few hours volunteering for the NGO team as it isa good way to relax and stay out of our daily troubles. Working with an NGO teaches you many life lessons that benefit your professional life and the values you gained will always stay with you. Let’s see some of the skills NGO volunteers develop after joining an NGO.

  • CommunicationSkills - While working in an NGO you will have to meet a lot of people from different backgrounds, and this helps to develop better communication skills. I have many friends who had difficulty talking to a person unknown and since they joined the NGO, they improved their skills in communicating with people and now have a wide social network.
  • CulturalAwareness – The best NGOs never consider a person’s gender, caste, or religion who works for them. When you work with such NGOs you get involved with people from different social backgrounds, religions, and gender which helps you to understand a new culture and create a positive work environment. It enhances your quality as an individual that benefits you in your entire life.
  • Increaseyour confidence – You will have various tasks to perform in an NGO and it makes you more responsible. Completing the assigned jobs on time for NGOs boosts your confidence to accept more challenging roles.
  • Leadershiprole – While volunteering in an NGO you may have to lead the team and take the responsibilities on your own. You willhave to deal with different types of people and will have to guide them without losing your temper. Managing an NGO team requires a lot of patience, andyou will have to give instructions to your team members as well as stay humble at the same time. You might face failures while performing a task which is an experience to overcome challenging times in your life.
  • Broadenyour thoughts – An NGO teaches you to work without selfishness or personal gains for others. When you are working for yourself, you will have a narrow range of thoughts while working for a large community you widen your thoughts and ideas.
